CES 2008 |
|
Recently the biggest world exhibition – Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that took place in Las-Vegas (USA) came to the end. 2700 companies presented their products and solutions of consumer electronics and high-tech field. The number of attendees has overcome the level of 140 000 persons.
First of all we should mention that the Show consisted of such fields as:
- Audio
- Content
- Digital Imaging
- Emerging Technology
- Gaming
- High-Perf. Audio & Home Theater
- Home Networking
- Home Theater & Video In-Vehicle Technology
- Wireless
As for the news of Digital TV it is important to note following events.
Polaroid has entered the Set-top Box market with its first product line – Freescape ™ STBs based on Qpixel's QL201B that supplements set-top box decoder and enables new features making the STB more powerful (high-quality analog recording, more efficient PVR storage and etc).
CyberLink presented new TV Solutions for notebooks, desktop PCs and mobile devices. TV Solutions provide standard features (IPTV, PayTV free-to air) as well as the range of additional ones including Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and digital video recording (DVR) functions.
The products of TVCyberLab have also been presented at the Show. AHT International the partner of TVCyberLab has successfully presented TVCyberLab’s IPTV application – TVMail. The work of the application was showed on the Ariana AllSii Set-top box provided by the AHT International. The application enables IPTV users to work with their e-mail boxes from their TVs via STBs and with the help of IR- or virtual keyboard. TVMail can also be launched on such STBs as AmiNET and Motorola IP STBs.
Another point to be singled out is the most impressive products presented at the show. They are: the first Laser TV-set by Mitsubishi, the biggest Plasma TV by Matsushita and new Pioneer TV, probably the thinnest one (9 mm carcass thick). Another interesting product was showed by Intel. It presented new platform for gaming PCs Sculltrail.
However the most important event of the Show was the announcement of the Microsoft Head – Bill Gates concerning his resignation from the company.
Finally we should note that the first CES took place in New York 1967 and it relocated to Las-Vegas in 1978. And it seems that soon we will experience another relocation of the Show most likely to the Orlando or Chicago as LA became too expensive to run the Show of such scale.

E-mail via TV - the launch of new service! |
|
E-mail is well-known and widely used tool in Russia. But, as Information Technologies are being developed, new services in this area appear. Test version of IPTV is being broadcasted in Novosibirsk already for a year. So, development of IPTV means development of qualitative services for TV viewers.
By request of Public Corporation "Sibirtelecom" Company "TVCyberLab" in cooperation with Closed Joint-Stock Company "Otkrytye Technologii" have developed client mail application - TV Mail. It is introduced in Novosibirsk and the whole Siberia for the first time, though it is wide spread service of IPTV.
The developed application gives IPTV users an opportunity to check their e-mail boxes, create and send messages as well as organize contacts in Address Book.
The fact that due to IPTV there is no more need to use PC to check e-mail, as TV viewer can do it with TV-set, is the key feature and moreover - the advantage of this application. However you can ask us: "But TV-set has no keyboard! So how you will type the message?" And here is our answer: "You are quite correct! There is still no TV-set equipped with keyboard. BUT...
Kreatel IP STB 1510.
There are client receiver-boxes (set-top boxes), which allow you to watch TV channels via IPTV. These devices are equipped with wireless keyboards, moreover, there is a virtual keyboard on TV screen - so you can type a message by using them!"
In case you have several e-mail boxes located at different servers, you will be able to check all of them with the help of TV Mail application.
Now viewers can use their TV-sets to check their e-mail, as well as to watch favorite shows and movies.
IPTV becomes more available in Novosibirsk and the whole country, so "TVCyberLab" Company will contribute to its development and distribution.

|
From September 20 till 22nd Exhibition "Siberian Forum of Information Technologies and Telecommunications" took place at the hall of International exhibition centre of Siberian Fair. Many telcos and IT companies took part at this event. Among the participants there were iTV software development companies and manufacturers of digital receiving/transmitting equipment, such as: "Otkrytye Tekhnologii" ("Open Technologies"), "Sibirtelecom", "Elogar", "General Satellite", "STC Cosmos". They have represented solutions for digital TV, digital receiving/transmitting equipment, and told about their plans concerning development of digital TV in Russia; according to this information the main directions in this process are:
- Internet TV (IPTV)
- Cable TV (DVB-C)
- Satellite TV (DVB-S)
Similar projects have already being held in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod and Kemerovo. Nowadays the idea of establishing IPTV, DVB-C, and DVB-T appeared in Novosibirsk too. The most perspective direction from commercial point of view for our city is IPTV, which seems to become the basic platform of digital interactive TV in the nearest future.
“TVCyberLab” company has also been at the Fair. Soon after visiting this event a decision was taken to contribute to establishment of new generation TV in our city by developing business-applications and games for end users.
We would like to wish organizers and participants of this event to hold such meetings as often as possible, since information technologies and telecommunication are the main factors in digital TV development.

Russia will complete digital switch-over by 2015 |
|
Deputy Minister for Information Technologies and Communications Boris Antonyuk is quoted as saying at one of the sessions of the Federation Council's Commission for information policy that the federal TV channels would be broadcast on digital satellite in 2005.
The report continued by giving some more details about the situation in Russia saying that by 2007, TV sets receiving analog and digital signals (together with setting of required equipment) will come into the RF market. Antonyuk hopes this will help stimulate development of the electronic industry in this country. He predicted that in six years, half of Russians will have digital TV sets and the analog television will become obsolete in Russia by 2016. He went on to say that the introduction of digital television in the world will be completed by 2028-2030 and it is believed that analog television will become obsolete if 85 per cent of the population already has digital TV sets. The Russian Government will consider a program for switching to digital television this year.
Antonyuk also mentioned that Russia is already working on digital broadcasting standards; Moscow, St.Petesrburg and Nizhny Novgorod are the territories where experimental digital television is presently broadcast and that it is planned that owners of digital TV sets will get their decoders for free.
